Axie Infinity for beginners:
Step-by-step guide

Axie Infinity is an online NFT based game centered around Pokemon-like creatures called Axies. It is a gaming DApp based on Ethereum. The Axie Infinity website describes Axies as “fierce creatures that love to battle, build, and hunt for treasures”.
Axies are one of a kind creatures because of their uniquely combined abilities. They can be likened to digital pets and are bred, raised, battle, collected and traded. Just as we have different breeds of pets, so are there different breeds of Axies. Users can create different unique Axies with different abilities (strengths and weaknesses) also called genes, which can be mixed to birth a one of a kind Axie. This makes trading them lucrative because each Axie is different in abilities (exponential genetic combinations).

There are two tokens in Axie Infinity, one is transactional (AXS), and the other token (SLP) is a reward token. AXS is the native token used in Axie Infinity and gamers use it for trading and buying digital assets it also gives holders the opportunity to take part in governance votes while SLP is used for breeding new Axies.

Players can earn these tokens while playing the game in two different modes – Adventure and Arena mode. In adventure mode, players level up by exploring the adventure story world on Axie Infinity Player versus Environment, PVE) while the arena mode sees players combating each other with their team of Axies and must win to level up (Player-versus-Player, PVP).

Axie Infinity was founded by Trung Nguyen (CEO), Jeff “The Jiho Zirlin (Growth Lead), Aleksander Larsen (COO) and Tu Doan (Art Director and Game Designer). It was released in October 2020 and is currently managed by the Vietnamese studio, Sky Mavis.

Users battle in real-time with their Axies and each Axie is represented as an NFT. To win a game, the player uses Axie Infinity cards attached to each Axie to command them during the game. There are over 100 Axie Infinity cards. These are used during the game for power moves against an opponent. Each of these cards works differently in battle mode and offers the gamer leverage in battle. Each card has its perks and powers. Examples include – Arco ( increases speed for two rounds using Acrobatic), and Catfish (heals damage by 80% using Swallow). They can be combined for larger damage attacks or team defence.

Note that three Axies make up a team. Each Axie has four cards which makes a total of twelve cards for the team. Winning a battle depends on how well you combine your cards and how effective you use your cards in a battle.

Birds are strong against Beast, Mech and Bug but weak against Reptile, Plant and Dusk.

An Axie has four essential stats:Skill, Health, Morale and Speed

Each of these elements determines the combat level of an Axie on the battlefield and what it can withstand on the battlefield.

Axies are categorised into two classes: Normal classes and Secret classes.

There are six normal classes, Beast, Bug, Aquatic, Plant, Bird, and Reptile, and three secret classes namely Mech, Dawn and Dusk.

Each of these classes affects the stat of an Axie and its strength and weakness depending on the class it is in. For example, Birds are strong against Beast, Mech and Bug but weak against Reptile, Plant and Dusk.

Step 1: Create a wallet

You require an account to play Axie Infinity. Once you sign up, you’re asked to create a Ronin wallet (this is a digital wallet that stores Axies, ETH and other digital assets). After setting up your account, you are redirected to the marketplace.

Step 2: Buy Axies

Before you can start playing, you’ll need three Axies that can be purchased in the Marketplace and also need ETH coins in your Ronin Wallet to do this.

Users can also borrow Axies from the Marketplace through the Axie Infinity scholarship economy. Scholars (borrowers/ workers) are loaned three Axies by Managers (Axie owners) to battle or grind for rare items or SLP and they share the loot (reward). The price of an Axie fluctuates and depends on elements such as experience, type and how rare it is.

Step 3: Create an account & start playing

After buying the Axies, then you’ll be able to create an Axie Infinity account, download the app and then play.

What’s the difference between AXS and Smooth Love Potion (SLP)?

There are two native tokens in Axie Infinity. AXS which is the native transactional token for Axie Infinity and Smooth Love Potion (SLP) is the reward token, an in-game currency and can only be used within the game. SLP is earned by gamers while playing the game in two modes – Arena and Adventure modes and winning, completing daily tasks and it is also used for breeding new Axies.  AXS is used for trading, transactions and also currency exchange.
